Program Information

Program Overview

QLab 4 makes it simple to create rich multimedia designs for live performances and installations. The software is used from Broadway to the West End, in churches, museums, store fronts, concert halls, and theatres around the world.

Figure 53 team members Sam Kusnetz (sound and projection designer) and Christopher Cahoon (developer) will give a complete tour of QLab 4, demonstrating its capabilities and discussing techniques and concepts for both designers and programmers.

What does the program offer?

The three-day workshop will start with a tour of the basic fundamentals of QLab 4, and will progress to include advanced topics such as the use of AU plugins, variable playback rate control, slicing and looping audio, and managing basic sound system tuning entirely within QLab. Video-related topics will include an introduction to QLab’s video capabilities, covering how to set up and use single screen surfaces as well as edge-blended multi-screen outputs, corner-pinning and mesh warping, use of live video effects, and projection animation techniques. Lighting-related topics will include creating instrument definitions, patching and cueing, and using QLab’s unique cue structure to your advantage when lighting a show.

Finally, the program will cover methods and techniques for being an effective, efficient programmer in tech rehearsals, such as using AppleScripts to improve your workflow, as well as advanced technical tools including configuring QLab systems for live backup redundancy, triggering QLab from external sources (as well as triggering those sources back), and a deep dive into QLab’s extensive OSC library.

Attendees are welcome (but not required) to bring a Mac laptop running OS 10.10 or later, and will be provided with a one week demo license of the full QLab 4 Bundle to use after the class for more experimentation.

Who should apply?

This workshop is ideal for anyone connected with sound and projectors for live presentations, such as designers, operators, stage managers, and composers. It would also be helpful for artists creating installations involving sound or projections (or both), technicians for corporate events, as well as choreographers, directors, and students.

Spaces in this program are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
