Self-Directed Writing Residency
Set in the heart of Banff National Park, The Banff Centre provides a perfect retreat setting for writers looking for focus and inspiration. This is the place you can come to be free from distraction and to focus deeply on a creative writing project.
What does the program offer?
You’ll find the time, space, and facilities for creative thinking, editing, and manuscript development. During this self-directed residency, which is a minimum of three days in length, you will have your own single room which will also double as your private workspace.
Participants also benefit from being a part of the broader creative community of artists at The Banff Centre.
Who should apply?
Writers in all creative genres are invited to apply. Applications are evaluated through an adjudicated process.
Your program fee includes a single bedroom on the Banff Centre campus for the duration of your program.
Get connected with other artists on campus and focus on your projects in a creative environment while we take care of the day-to-day essentials.
Using a credit-based system to dine on campus, our flexible meal plans allow you to select meals according to your own needs during your stay.
The Regular Flex meal plan includes $29 credit per day, equivalent to lunch and dinner in Vistas Dining Room.
The Full Flex meal plan includes $38 credit per day, equivalent to breakfast, lunch and dinner in Vistas Dining Room.
Your program fee includes free access to the swimming pool, climbing gym and fitness suite as well as discounted rates for classes at the Sally Borden Fitness and Recreation Centre.
Enjoy special artist rates for ticketed performances or complimentary access to events.
Fees & Financial Assistance
Writers are responsible for all costs associated with their stay, including materials, photocopies, printing, faxes, phone charges, shipping costs, travel, room and board, and personal living expenses.
Financial assistance from The Banff Centre is not available for Self-directed Writing Residencies.

How to Apply
A one-page resume or C.V. describing academic, professional, and other relevant experience.
Sample of work
One or two selections of previously published works (15-20 pages maximum, please double-space all submissions).
A one-page description of your proposed work-in-progress and indicative timelines.
Your preferred and alternate dates for the residency. Please note that the minimum residency duration is 3 days.
Note: Guest visits are limited to two nights.
Participants are selected by impartial adjudicators on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to artistic merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the artist's work will benefit from the program.
Applicants will be notified of their status as soon as adjudication is complete.
All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of The Banff Centre.
