Participants will work with the Banff Centre Staging Team on all Banff Centre productions, presentations, conferences, and outreach programs. Responsibilities may include interpreting and generating technical information, loading shows in and out, working the shows, rigging, selecting and operating tools, and operating and maintaining stage equipment.
What does the program offer?
Practicum participants will learn the core skills required to be a staging technician. Participants are responsible for the smooth delivery of the production needs for all Banff Centre Performing Arts shows, events, and conferences.
The program offers one-on-one mentorship and coaching from our experienced professional staff. Practicums will leave Banff Centre with marketable skills and the confidence and competence to step into roles as specialized professionals in their field. Our alumni can be found nationally and internationally working at opera, dance, music, and theatre companies, and training at university and colleges including Cirque Du Soleil, the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, the National Theatre School, the National Arts Centre, the National Ballet of Canada, and the Canadian Opera Company.
Practicums can expect to work on a wide array of shows including theatre, dance, opera, and music as presented by Banff Centre; and. a range of artists at various points in their careers. Productions created in residencies at Banff Centre have toured in Canada and internationally. In addition, the Staging department offers specialized workshops to the practicum program based on the learning objectives of the selected participants.
Who should apply?
Ideal candidates will have completed formal theatre technical training in an accredited institution or have equivalent work experience and have a passionate interest in the entertainment industry. They will be able to demonstrate strong organizational aptitude, be computer literate, and have an interest in exploring theatre, music and production technologies. Potential candidates are aspiring professionals looking to develop their careers and capabilities and demonstrate interest in specializing in staging as a profession. Participants will be required to supply their own Class 1, C.S.A. approved safety footwear, and show blacks in good repair and free of logos.
You are eligible for Banff Centre housing (based on availability). You are responsible for your own room and board costs. Current rates for Banff Centre accommodation are $8.06 / day (shared) or $16.12 / day (single) and will be deducted from the living allowance.
As space is extremely limited, Banff Centre housing is available for practicum participants only.
You will receive a living allowance of $427 per week.
Note that financial assistance and stipend awards are considered taxable income for Revenue Canada.
Your program fee includes free access to the swimming pool, climbing gym, and fitness suite as well as discounted rates for classes at the Sally Borden Fitness and Recreation Centre.

How to Apply
Start dates for this program may be flexible. Please note your availability in your personal statement.
Participants are selected by impartial adjudicators on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to technical merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the technician’s career will benefit from the program.
Applicants will be notified of their status as soon as adjudication is complete.

International applicants: Government of Canada international visitor visa regulations limit participation to no longer than six months.
