Learn about wig and hair types and the construction techniques for making wig foundations and facial hair. Makeup will play a significant part in participant-led projects, which will also include special effects.
Show-based learning may occur as you meet the practical and design requirements of supporting a production. You will also learn how departments like costume, lighting, and sound integrate with the wigs and makeup department to collaborate and build a production.
You will be responsible for setting your own goals and learning objectives, with encouragement and support from a network of mentors. These mentors will provide insight into the demands of the workplace with advice and guidance on how to advance within the industry.
What does the program offer?
While living in the picturesque Canadian Rockies, you will act as a member of the Wigs & Makeup Team, learning the core skills required to become a wigs and makeup technician.
You will receive an introduction to what the current wig and makeup industry requires as a profession. You will gain experience through working on show-related projects and performances such as opera, drama, and dance.
Workshops may be offered focusing on special effects makeup, lighting, sound, and costumes. You will have the opportunity to put your skills into practice in a collaborative photo shoot project. You will also have opportunities to engage with visiting artists to expand your knowledge base and professional network.
Who should apply?
Are you looking to develop your skills and capabilities, with an interest in specializing in wigs and makeup as a profession? We are seeking applicants who will enjoy working with their hands, and have patience and an eye for detail. Visual arts experience is an asset.
Applicants should have a desire to work with people in a collaborative manner, an appreciation for creativity, resourcefulness, and ingenuity. A positive and curious attitude and a tendency toward organization are also helpful.
Applicants from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply, with a special invitation to individuals of Indigenous descent.
You are eligible for Banff Centre housing (based on availability). You are responsible for your own room and board costs. Current rates for Banff Centre accommodation are $8.06 / day (shared) or $16.12 / day (single) and will be deducted from the living allowance.
As space is extremely limited, Banff Centre housing is available for practicum participants only.
You will receive a living allowance of $61 per day.
Note that financial assistance and stipend awards are considered taxable income for Revenue Canada.
Your program fee includes free access to the swimming pool, climbing gym, and fitness suite as well as discounted rates for classes at the Sally Borden Fitness and Recreation Centre.

Successful applicants will receive a daily living allowance while part of the program. Practicums are responsible for their own room and board costs but are eligible for subsidized Banff Centre housing based on availability (see What's Included for more information).
How to Apply

Participants are selected by impartial adjudicators on the basis of their submitted material. In addition to technical merit, consideration will be given to the likelihood that the technician's career will benefit from the program.
Applicants will be notified of their status as soon as adjudication is complete.
International applicants: Government of Canada international visitor visa regulations limit participation to no longer than six months.
All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes.
