“Surrounded by a group of five other highly motivated writers and a couple of extremely helpful editors, I had a breakthrough and suddenly understood what the book’s deeper purpose had to be. I remember one evening in particular, madly jotting down scenes and turning points on a stack of index cards that, by the end of the night, were scattered all over my room and bed. It was one of those magical times when the entire project was in my head and the writing couldn’t keep up with the thoughts.”

About Mountain and Wilderness Writing
In this unique residency program, six writers delve into their own writing projects (essay, memoir, biography, feature article, poetry, or work of fiction) on a topic in the area of mountain or wilderness culture. This includes writing with a focus on adventure, history, or the environment.
Within the spectacular environs of Banff National Park, the residency offers participants individual consultation with two faculty editors experienced in book and magazine publishing, along with regular workshop discussions. Writers can also interact with invited guest speakers and artists from other fields.
The Banff Centre campus is situated amid the Canadian Rocky Mountains in Canada’s first national park — an ideal location for a residency that explores the mountain experience. In addition to working on their writing projects, participants have the opportunity for outdoor pursuits including hiking, rock and ice climbing, cross-country and downhill skiing, and photography.
Who Should Apply
This program is designed for emerging and established writers seeking a period of dedicated time to work on a project, in any genre, that explores mountain or wilderness culture. If you are seeking a professional development opportunity offering guidance from an experienced writer/editor, and the ability to connect with other writers and leaders in the field of mountain and wilderness culture, this residency is for you. Applications from writers from around the world are welcomed. For more specifics, see the Eligibility section.
