Independent Studio Residencies

Studios and solitude to support your next idea

Independent Studio Residencies offer creative professionals 1 to 2 weeks of freedom to work independently - without faculty, programming, workshops, performances or production support.

We welcome dancers, choreographers, theatre-makers, opera artists, musicians, and interdisciplinary collaborators whose projects do not fit in a Leighton Artist Studio to apply. Ideal for solo creators or small to medium sized ensembles, these residencies suit those who need space to move or studios in which to make noise.

Whether you're starting something new, refining a project, or exploring new directions, these residencies provide focused time and private studio or rehearsal space to dive deep into your process.

Join the global community of creatives who choose Banff Centre as a place to create, explore, and evolve.

About Independent Studio Residencies

Independent Studio Residencies offer the opportunity to move and make noise. These residencies focus on those whose projects do not fit in a Leighton Artist Studio and still provide an opportunity for artists to focus on their work in a nourishing environment with fewer distractions and commitments found in a traditional program format.

Residencies include smaller, private studios and rehearsal spaces equipped for performance-based practices, with features such as:

  • Dance flooring (Marley/sprung or carpet)
  • Small PA system
  • Tables, chairs, mirror wall or rolling mirrors
  • Height clearance for lifts/choreography
  • Pianos and large instruments too large for travel
  • Self-recording equipment

Professional recording may be available in our recording studio or performance spaces, pending availability. This would incur a separate fee. If interested, please indicate as such in your application, your preferred recording date, and a brief outline of the project scope.

Dates and Studios will be assigned according to studio availability, requirements and ability to support the project needs.

Longer residencies may be considered on a case-by-case basis subject to availability.

We recognize, with deep respect and gratitude, our home on the side of Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain. In the spirit of respect and truth, we honour and acknowledge the Banff area, known as “Minihrpa” (translated in Stoney Nakoda as “the waterfalls”) and the Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Îyârhe Nakoda (Stoney Nakoda) – comprised of the Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Goodstoney Nations – as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation and the Blackfoot Confederacy comprised of the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Shuswap Nations, Ktunaxa Nations, and Metis Nation of Alberta, Rockyview District 4. We acknowledge all Nations who live, work, and play here, help us steward this land, and honour and celebrate this place.
