Silvia is one of the most outstanding Mexican playwrights in her generation. She has written over fifty plays, full length, one acts and monologues, including: Vampire Trilogy, Fever at 107 degrees, Coco: Mademoiselle Gabrielle, Seashells without an Ocean, Anteroom to happiness. This play gave way to the female monologue When the air is purple. She writes opera librettos and fiction and is a translator and director. Silvia has been a Mexican Writers Center fellow and National Endowment for the Arts fellow. She has been Young Writers grantee by FONCA in Mexico; she was guest to the Gateways Program in Texas; artist in residence at the Writers Room, New York; Cultural Contact grantee by the Mexico-US Trust for Culture and The Lark Theater Company for the translation of her play Fever at 107 Degrees. She participated in the development of the Mexico-US Exchange Program with The Lark Theatre Company. She was awarded the National System of Arts Creators Grant (FONCA); and Iberescena grant, Madrid. Silvia has won domestic and international awards for her plays. Currently she is working on her second opera libretto Whirlwind I am based on the life of Mexican shaman María Sabina, and in her full-length play Fierceness, the second play of the trilogy Anteroom to happiness.
Anteroom to Happiness is a play about the migration from Mexico to the US, from the point of view of the migrants, after a field research and interviews by the playwright. Using a kind of mirroring effect between how migration is lived and the image of migration in the minds of people who don’t participate in this journey. The play is written interweaving reality and dreams to portray the migration between Mexico and the US from the bridges seen as an anteroom to happiness at the other side of the border. The first version of the play was translated, revised and read at the Banff Playwrights Lab 2019.
