Dance programs at Banff Centre provide a rare space for today’s curious professional dance artist. Dance programs encourage research, sharing, and questions around topics such as the creation process, training, somatic practices, and the future of contemporary dance.

The Final Tuning dance residency at Banff Centre, taking place within the Theatre Arts department, offers two dance companies the time, space, and resources in a spectacular mountain setting to take their previously developed work to the next stage. It is an opportunity to rehearse, refine, and use Banff Centre theatres to incorporate technical elements into the projects. The residency completes with a presentation of the work (or work-in-progress) to the public.
In Final Tuning - Winter 2025, the two participating projects were Project InTandem's "Exile" choreographed by Meghann Michalsky, and Hélène Simoneau Danse's "Late Bloomer."
"Exile"—described as a "rock show meets contemporary dance"—drew on the raw forces of wind and water, elements that mirrored Michalsky's own personal and artistic evolution.
"Late Bloomer" explored questions around connection, power, and belonging. Through beautiful, layered choreography and a moody, immersive design, the piece asked: How do we show up for one another? Where do we fall short? How is belonging connected to survival?
The staff and faculty encouraged us and made it possible to ask and answer the questions, try the experiments, and push the boundaries in order to better understand ourselves, our methodology, and the work.
