Isobel Hendry announced as 2020 Mountain Idol winner

Congratulations to the 2020 Mountain Idol 19 year old Isobel Hendry from Canmore. Mountain Idols are young individuals who elevate the position of their sport, exemplify the outdoor lifestyle, and are valued role models and mentors in the Bow Valley outdoor community. Special thanks to Norquay and Rab for sponsoring the 2020 Mountain Idol competition.

Isobel represented Canada at the World Junior Cross Country Ski championships, and represented Alberta at the Canada Winter Games and won two bronze medals. She has kayaked many local rivers and creeks including the Pipestone, Sheep Falls, Elbow Falls, Skookumchuk and Kicking Horse. Isobel placed 3rd at cross country running provincials, and has completed numerous mountain runs throughout the Rocky Mountains. She has competed in the woman’s Skimo Pan American Championship and has ski toured all over the Rockies including many classic routes on the Wapta Icefield. 

As the 2020 Mountain Idol, Isobel receives a cash award of $1000, an opportunity for a guided hike on Mount Norquay’s via ferrata, a Rab jacket, and Smartwool merino ski shirt and socks.  

The Mountain Idol initiative believes that getting youth outdoors is important from a health, wellness, economic, and environmental perspective. Through the Mountain Idol initiative, Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival aims to inspire more youth to lead a healthy and active outdoor lifestyle. Candidates for Mountain Idol are aged 23 and under, nominated by their community, and reside in the geographic area between Lake Louise and Exshaw.
