Recorded for broadcast, this special anniversary event is sure to be our biggest Laugh Out Loud Live ever!
Laugh Out Loud is CBC Radio's hit stand-up comedy show. Each week, host Ali Hassan presents a mix of established and emerging Canadian comedians recorded at various festivals and clubs across the country. Our goal is to make more Canadians laugh out loud whenever they want — on radio, on-line and via our free podcast.
ALI HASSAN is a Canadian stand-up comedian, actor and radio and television personality. CBC fans will recognize him as the weekly host of Laugh Out Loud, the recent host of the annual battle of the books, Canada Reads, and the past lead panelist of George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight.
He is a comedy festival favourite and a Canadian Comedy Award nominee. He has also starred in films like French Immersion, Breakaway and Goon; on television as a recurring character on FXX's Man Seeking Woman, PBS Kids' Odd Squad, the CTV/eOne series Cardinal; and recently on the VICE series FUBAR and ABC’s Designated Survivor.
In 2016, he began touring his one man show Muslim Interrupted. The show ran at both Just for Laughs in Montreal and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and Ali is presently receiving accolades and an enormous amount of press coverage in 2017 as he tours it in major cities across Canada.
Martha Chaves is a busy comic. Her infectious, candid style, her captivating stage presence, and her gift to relate to a wide range of audiences grant her numerous presentations at clubs, colleges, fundraisers, corporate functions and comedy festivals.
Martha is a veteran of multiple Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival, and of the Winnipeg Comedy Festival. She has also appeared in the Halifax, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Boston Comedy Festivals, and in the “Marshalls’ Women of Comedy,” in NYC. In Spanish, she’s performed in the Festival Del Humor de Caracol, in Bogotá, Colombia.
Her versatile material mixed with her fluency in 4 languages make her an asset to perform for an array of fascinating audiences. For example, the Canadian Peacekeeping Troops (in Alert, Egypt, Israel, and Afghanistan) and The Nobel Women’s Initiative, a delegation of women led by Nobel Peace Prize winners (in Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala).
In 2015, Martha warmed up 43,000 people for the 2015 Pan Am Games - Opening Ceremony and in 2016, she hosted the ACTRA Awards, in Toronto.
Montreal-based Derek Seguin is one of the most sought after stand up comedians on the international circuit. He has performed at the prestigious invitation-only Just For Laughs festival an impressive nine times in Montreal as well as appearing at JFL Norwest in Vancouver and JFL42 in Toronto. He has also taped Television specials at the Halifax Comedy Festival several times and is a 6 time TV performer at the Winnipeg festival.
GQ Magazine’s Comedy Editor reported about JFL that: “Montreal-comic Derek Seguin stole one of the most star-studded gala shows last year from host Whitney Cummings. This year, he appeared in The Nasty Show and proceeded to steal that too. A true star and Montreal's pride and joy.”
The Montreal Gazette enthused that: “Derek Seguin earned a standing ovation for his set during the ninth Just for Laughs gala … had me gasping for air, I was laughing so hard at the detailing of his second date with his Newfoundland girlfriend. ... What made it great, however, was not the boldness of his material but that he described it all in such childlike wonder. Brilliant.”
He has also appeared on CBC Radio’s, “The Debaters” more than twenty-five times and is one of that show’s and CBC’s Laugh Out Loud’s fan favorites.
Undeniably one of Canada’s hottest comedians, he most recently walked away with the top prize and title of Sirius XM’s “Canada’s Top Comic” competition; a contest that spanned the entire country with finalists from every major city.
Tim Nutt tells jokes, well, more like funny stories with jokes and has been getting away with it for just over 20 years. Tim pushes comedy to explosive new levels and dimensions. He expertly explores the hilarity in everyday life, delighting you with his bizarre concepts and twisted viewpoints, combining one-liners and crafty storytelling.
He has had some pretty cool adventures; he’s been to comedy festivals all over the world; Edinburgh Comedy Festival, Montreal’s famous JUST FOR LAUGHS, Halifax’s HA Comedy Festival and The Winnipeg Comedy Festival to name just a few.
Often compared to some of his comedy heroes like Billy Connolly and George Carlin, Tim is a consummate Storyteller and Entertainer, weaving his unique point of view into a great performance that is sure to please.
“With a name like Nutt, it's hard to imagine a career outside comedy. This longhair's brain is trained on everyday observations filtered through a layer of laconic spite. Nutt plays against his looks. At 6-foot-2, with shoulder length hair and a beard, Nutt is every inch the rocker. Crowds expect him to tell gags about biker babes and blowing joints but he is much too intelligent and sophisticated. He's a one-man-war on stupid people, playing on audiences' preconceptions." - Andrew Clark, The Toronto Star
Born and raised in Thornhill, Ontario, Dave Hemstad was an Academic All-American golfer who was struck by lightning during a tournament…which significantly altered his career path. Now, Dave is a 17-year veteran of the Canadian comedy scene and highly sought after for his particular brand of clean humour, dissecting our day-to-day lives with a razor sharp wit that is oh-so-relatable.
Dave is a triple threat in the comedy world as a stand-up, writer, and actor. He has taped numerous gala sets at Just For Laughs, the Halifax Comedy Festival, and the Winnipeg Comedy Festival, as well as recording his own Comedy Now! special. Dave is a regular and favourite on CBC’s The Debaters and has written for CBC’s Still Standing and for the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards. As an actor, Dave starred in the 2011 TV series Almost Heroes, and has appeared on Lost Girl, Flashpoint, Bomb Girls, and Little Mosque, among others, Dave reads a room like no other, and his confident, hilarious delivery makes him shine in any venue.
Whether it’s a 3,000-seat theatre, a corporate conference room, or small comedy club, Dave’s comedic genius is known and admired across Canada by audiences and performers alike.
Big Daddy Tazz
