Gather Listen Hear

Gather Listen Hear is a multi-day interdisciplinary event centred on the relationship between sound and land.

Alongside faculty and participant concerts taking place in this summer’s Classical Indigenous Music Residency and Jazz and Sonic Arts Residency programs, we invite you to experience artworks, new commissions and events presented by Walter Phillips Gallery during Gather Listen Hear. Join us for an activation of Rebecca Belmore’s iconic work, Ayum-ee-aawach Oomama-mowan: Speaking to Their Mother at Two Jack Lake hosted by Wanda Nanibush; the premiere of a newly commissioned score, Background Music by Raven Chacon; a talk by T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss, Anne Riley and Lisa Myers in Mike MacDonald’s Butterfly Garden; and the presentation of the commissioned audio-based work with accompanying visual scores, Dawn Chorus, Evensong (Bow River Valley) by Lou Sheppard at Banff Centre’s Shaw Amphitheatre, with a graphic-score making workshop hosted by the artist and participatory chorus co-led by Sheppard and Pamela Hart.

Gather Listen Hear is organized by Artistic Directors Megumi Masaki (Music), Janine Windolph (Indigenous Arts), and Jacqueline Bell (Curator, Walter Phillips Gallery).

We recognize, with deep respect and gratitude, our home on the side of Sacred Buffalo Guardian Mountain. In the spirit of respect and truth, we honour and acknowledge the Banff area, known as “Minihrpa” (translated in Stoney Nakoda as “the waterfalls”) and the Treaty 7 territory and oral practices of the Îyârhe Nakoda (Stoney Nakoda) – comprised of the Bearspaw, Chiniki, and Goodstoney Nations – as well as the Tsuut’ina First Nation and the Blackfoot Confederacy comprised of the Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai. We acknowledge that this territory is home to the Shuswap Nations, Ktunaxa Nations, and Metis Nation of Alberta, Rockyview District 4. We acknowledge all Nations who live, work, and play here, help us steward this land, and honour and celebrate this place.
