Maurice Ravel Sonate Posthume (1897)
Accompanied by Charlotte Tang

Maurice Ravel Sonate Posthume (1897), The Violin Sonata No. 1 by Maurice Ravel, known also as Sonate posthume, is the composer's earliest instance of a sonata for this combination of instruments.

Maurice Ravel Tzigane
Accompanied by Megumi Masaki

Maurice Ravel Tzigane is a rhapsodic composition by the French composer Maurice Ravel. It was commissioned by and dedicated to Hungarian violinist Jelly d'Arányi, great-niece of the influential violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim. The original instrumentation was for violin and piano (with optional luthéal attachment). The first performance took place in London on April 26, 1924 with the dedicatee on violin and with Henri Gil-Marchex at the piano (with luthéal).

Yearning, Every Dawn

An improvised composition from the project Yearning, Every Dawn by Aida Shirazi and Niloufar Shiri. Yearning, Every Dawn is a live music journey merging Iranian classical and western electronic sounds, fusing timbre, Persian poetry, and live painting. The newly-launched and ongoing project is a laboratory for experimentation with composed and improvised music. What you hear today is an excerpt from the 45-minute project which we will perform in March in Austin, TX.

Charlotte Tang
Schubert renewed

Schubert has a long history with the piano maker, Graf, and he considered Graf's instruments as one of the finest in his time. You will be hearing Schubert's Sonata in G, D.894, Andante on the Graf piano replica built by Regier. This piano has lots of nuance and distinct colours across the various registers. These effects are enhanced by the four pedals, which make soft dynamics especially interesting. It is my genuine hope that the charms of this "old" piano will grace the concert halls again!

Lindsay Kay
Don't Tease Me

An original song by Lindsay Kay, the first iteration of which was composed some 8 years ago here in Banff, revisited tonight.

Megaria Halim
"Kotekan" from Glimpses by Vivian Fung

Kotekan is an Indonesian term that describes the technique of interlocking rhythms used in traditional Balinese gamelan. This piece uses fast interlocking rhythms coupled with different sound colours created from the prepared strings to bring out the percussive nature of the piano.

Tango Etude No. 3 by Astor Piazzolla (arr. by Ryan Davis)

Tango Étude No. 3 is the third in a set of six that Piazzolla composed for the flute, highlighting his unique musical language of Tango Nuevo. Drawing on elements of classical and jazz idioms, along with his considerable experience as a bandoneon player, Piazzolla's compositional style was at times criticized for its departure from traditional tango form, but later lauded for its inventiveness and expansion of Argentina's celebrated culture. My arrangement of this piece explores virtuosic and imaginative possibilities that are not often afforded to viola players and presents the composer's masterpiece in a new light.
