SOUNDS NEW: Michael Clarke and BMiR Artists

About the Program

Banff Musicians in Residence provides space and focused time for program participants of all musical genres to concentrate on artistic development while working on projects that can be either individually or group/ensemble based. Participants have the freedom to structure their time around their project needs, and receive artistic inspiration and career advice from well-established faculty.

SOUNDS NEW

Composer and software developer, Professor Michael Clarke is Director of the groundbreaking project “Interactive Research in Music as Sound,” that utilizes technology to engage more directly with sound. Participants from the Banff Musicians in Residence program will explore new whirlwinds of timbres, rhythms, and synergy across diverse music genres.

SYNCRONYX: THE HUMAN INSTRUMENT

In this experimental performance, Khai & Conan bridge the gap between movement and music. SYNCRONYX is a movement-based performance that assists with the creation of music in real time.

Fields of Athenry

This reimagination of the Irish ballad Fields of Athenry is a new composition for violin, voice and tapes. It draws on Irish folk music traditions fused with modern classical string playing. This new work aims to show that not only can violins sing, they can groove!

Tim(br)e II (2009/2013), multi-channel fixed media work (8’26”)

Tim(br)e II is entirely derived from a single 13-second sampled oboe phrase (recorded by Jinny Shaw), a complete version of which appears (transformed) only at the very end. The title refers to the way this work explores the ambiguous boundary between events perceived separately in time and sonorities that fuse into textures or timbres. Tim(br)e II is also a study in stasis and movement, subtle internal changes at times contrasting with more dramatic gestural events enhanced by spatialization. Tim(br)e II was commissioned by Musicon in 2009 and revised in 2013.

Cascade (1999), soloist and live electronics (c.10’)

Cascade was originally commissioned by Steven Altoft for solo trumpet and live electronics. Tonight is the premiere of a version for soprano saxophone. Cascade is in two movements. In the first, a rich texture (derived entirely from the live performance) gradually accumulates around the soloist before collapsing. The second movement opens with lively rhythmic interplay between the soloist and the electronic transformations. At the very end the work returns to the harmony and calm of the opening.

Milton Man Gogh (Andrew Saragossi, Zac Sakrewski, Benjamin Shannon)
Ill Man (on a plane flight)

Distance can really put a halt to the creative process. After two years of sporadic performances and no recorded output, Milton Man Gogh decided it would be best to travel halfway across the world together, just to make sure they got something done. Collaboration is the core of what they do, and it's time for them to get back to basics in the most extreme way possible. How on-brand.

Milton Man Gogh are excited to present a small peek into their collaborative process and present an in-progress composition, written while at the Banff Centre.
