Because we believe that artists bring a unique perspective when discussing today’s critical social matters, we’re proud to announce a Banff Centre partnership with the CBC, the AGO, and Massey Hall to present a new live event series, AGO Creative Minds at Massey Hall.

Creative Minds is a semi-annual series that “brings together leading artists, musicians, authors and filmmakers for an evening of energetic conversation about the most pressing social concerns of our time.” Creative people don’t just reflect our culture back to us — they also play a role in shaping it, so this provocative speaker series highlights the experiences and opinions of some of our most inventive minds.

Commenting on their support of Creative Minds, Jonas and Lynda Prince said, “For several years, we’ve been invested in a vision of the AGO that positions the gallery—and Toronto—at the centre of an international dialogue around art and ideas. It’s exciting to see several of Canada’s leading cultural institutions coming together to create something new that can have global impact.”

“With Creative Minds, we are putting artists at the centre of vital conversations that tackle important issues,” said Stephan Jost, Michael and Sonja Koerner Director, and CEO.

Each event will see a new panel of artists discussing a timely social event through the lens of their work and lives. The topic of the first event, hosted by CBC Metro Morning’s Matt Galloway on September 20 at 8 p.m., is art and social justice. It will feature a conversation between singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie, Scotiabank Giller Prize-winning author André Alexis, inter-disciplinary artist Rebecca Belmore and filmmaker Deepa Mehta.

The night promises to be a challenging and essential dialogue on “activism, resistance and reconciliation” from some of contemporary culture’s most innovative thinkers.

“We are proud to be part of a project that champions the conversations that inform the creative process,” said Janice Price, President and CEO of Banff Centre. “This creative process is something we are committed to nurturing on our campus daily in Banff, and we look forward to the insights into the creation journey that will be spotlighted through this new series.”

Tickets will be available through the Roy Thomson Hall box office on June 10. Advance tickets are available for AGO Curator’s Circle, Massey Hall & Roy Thomson Hall FriendsFirst, and AGO members. If you can’t attend in person, CBC will be streaming the events online and broadcasting on the radio so you never have to miss out on the conversation.
