Strub is a ceramicist from Toronto who recently joined us as an Emerging Banff Artist in Residence. While with us, he focused on creating large-scale sculptures of his drag alter ego, Loxanne Creamcheese, dressed in ensembles based on Jewish foods.
Beyond the making process, my time in this residency has been life-changing. It taught me so much about how realistic and feasible having a career as an artist can be. Getting to meet successful art world professionals and receiving advice and guidance from them was priceless. It also reaffirmed how passionate I am about ceramics and how much more of my time I want to dedicate to it.

Jesús is a Graphic mural artist and painter from Tlaxiaco Oaxaca, México, recently joined us on campus as a Leighton Artist for the studio portion of Akunumusǂitis: Ecological Engagement Through the Seasons. This Indigenous visual arts program invited artists to engage in a two-part seasonal residency focusing on land-based and cultural activities. Jesús spent his time in our Gerin Lajoie Studio and created this stunning mural on one of our music huts. Central to Jesús' mural is the buffalo, who were significant to many Indigenous Peoples of the region and beyond as a source of sustenance and survival.
I wanted to know more about the culture of native peoples and make a dialogue through art with my own culture.

Fashion Designer Heather Bouchier (Seeseequasis) recently joined us for our inaugural Indigenous Haute Couture residency. While with us, she incorporated moosehide, dentalium shells, and horsehair to create her piece. Dentalium was used as currency long ago amongst Indigenous communities and internationally. It adorned everything from jewelry to clothing and art.
One thing I did not anticipate coming in was how emotional this journey would be. It took many tears, self-discovery and mistakes to make it through. I realized how my loss of culture has impacted my life and my work. However, the beauty and culture of everyone I worked with, designers, faculty and staff, inspired me so much, and I'm so thankful for all of them.
