Anthony Braxton’s Composition No. 245 (GTM) was composed in 2000 and is part of Braxton’s “Ghost Trance Music” series of compositions. The Ghost Trance Music is heavily influenced by Braxton’s study of the Native American Ghost Dance, the core ceremony of a messianic spiritual and political movement originating in Paiute communities and famously performed by Lakota Sioux forces at the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890. It features a "primary melody" played in unison by the ensemble, which contains “portals” bridging his Language Music improvisation system, "secondary compositions" utilizing both graphic and traditional notations, and "tertiary materials" selected by the performers from Braxton’s entire repertoire. In this performance, the group explores Braxton’s Composition No. 245 (GTM) as a starting point for large and small group improvisation.
