Experience the visionary work of German composer Sandeep Bhagwati, who brings diverse musical influences together in elegant harmony. And be captivated by Nguyễn Thanh Thủy, a renowned đàn tranh player reimagining Vietnamese traditional music through a modern lens.
Anchoring the concert is a performance from Australia-based contemporary music ensemble Hand to Earth Trio—a groundbreaking collaboration between Daniel Yipininy Wilfred, a Yolŋu songman preserving ancient storytelling traditions from northeast Arnhem Land; Sunny Kim, a Korean vocalist drawing influences from experimental jazz; and Peter Knight, an innovative trumpeter, composer, and producer blending acoustic and electronic textures.
These artists invite you to explore music that transcends borders and time.
“In our performances, you’re going to experience friendship. And you’ll hear us share ancient ideas and stories, but told in a way that’s quite contemporary,” says Kim.
“When art-making crosses cultures… what you end up with is the essence of human connection,” adds Knight.

RASA POEMS
is a collection of 72 micropoems that evoke a sound feeling or a musical attitude that I collated from my own writings and those of other poets. I often use them as prompts or improvisation, in many different ways. In this performance I initiate the music with one, and then listen how it evolves, choosing up to 7 more poems to influence the flow of improvisation - a bit like, on a hike, an unexpected vista can change your feeling about yourself, and change the path you take.
SUTRA
is a postcard score, a diamond matrix from which each musician can choose their atonal melodies. As we slowly make our way through the matrix, common themes emerge and textural affinities shimmer. A sutra is a teaching and learning poem, and this piece is inspired by a verse from the Buddhist Diamond Sutra (the oldest printed book found so far, from Tang China (around 900 CE)):" All things composed are like a dream - a bubble, illusion, a drop of dew, a flash of lightning. Thus shall we perceive them.
