During summer programming in our early days, landscape classes were held daily around Banff. Pictured here in the "then" photo is Walter J. Phillips with landscape painting students at the base of Bow Falls in 1947.
Walter J. Phillips taught with us for nearly 20 years, from 1940-1959. He was a renowned painter and printmaker specializing in colour woodblock printing.
In August of 2023, we re-created this archival image with current Banff Centre staff, including our new CEO and President Chris Lorway acting as Walter!
Fun side fact: Bow Falls, located below the Banff Springs Hotel, was used as a key site in the 1954 film River of No Return starring Marilyn Monroe.
