Fall and winter events showcase diverse performances at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity

BANFF, AB, July 19, 2017 – Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity is proud to announce its fall and winter lineup featuring the best in contemporary dance, music, literary, and visual and digital arts. The season showcases a series of mainstage performances, artist talks and family fun events. Tickets are on sale July 19 at 12 noon on banffcentre.ca/events

Kicking off the fall season on September 10 is a solo performance by Randy Bachman, “the architect of Canadian rock n’ roll.” Bachman co-founded The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and is known worldwide for hits such as Taking Care of Business, These Eyes, American Woman, and You Ain’t Seen Nothin Yet.

The holiday season offers great performances, including the East Coast musical stylings of The Barra MacNeils (November 25); the iconic jazz soundtrack of A Charlie Brown Christmas performed live by Jerry Granelli Trio (December 3); CBC’s Steve Patterson hosting The Debaters Christmas Show (December 9); and Tom Jackson: Christmas 150 (December 17), featuring the master storyteller and musician.

A series of family events will also be showcased throughout fall and winter including performances by  magician, illusionist, and comedian Murray SawChuck (October 15); and, One-Man Star Wars Trilogy (November 18) performed by Charles Ross.

Events at Banff Centre are deeply connected to our artistic programming and participant residencies. On February 10, Ballet BC presents the classic story of Romeo and Juliet, crafted by French choreographer Medhi Walerski and workshopped in Banff during a Performing Arts Residency. Renowned Canadian choreographer Frédérick Gravel presents Some Hope for the Bastards, a contemporary dance performance and Banff Centre co-production on January 20.

Banff Centre’s fall and winter seasons will welcome both national and international participants looking to develop their skills with the help of our renowned faculty. Programs such as Centering Ourselves, Banff Musicians in Residence, Fables for the 21st Century, and BAiR Emerging, provide participants with the opportunity to present their work to the public through our Open Works Series.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS 

September 14 – An Evening with David Chariandy
Canadian award-winning author David Chariandy joins us for a soft-launch of his much anticipated new novel, Brother. Chariandy has been nominated for a number of literary prizes, including 10 for his novel Soucouyant.

September 29 – Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and National Music Centre Present: New Canadian Global Music Orchestra at Studio Bell (Calgary)
With 12 diverse musicians from all over the world and now living in Canada, the New Canadian Global Music Orchestra was created by The Royal Conservatory of Music to explore and celebrate the cultural diversity and pluralism of Canada.

October 5 - Rachel Cusk in conversation with Sheila Heti
Award-winning authors Rachel Cusk (The Lucky Ones and Arlington Park) and Sheila Heti (How Should a Person Be and Ticknor)  share the stage for an intimate evening of conversation and literary art.

October 15 - Murray SawChuck: Magician
Currently headlining at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Murray SawChuck is a Canadian stage illusionist, magician, comedian, and actor. Dubbed “The 'Dennis the Menace' of Magic,” his show blends “comical mishaps” with illusions and magic tricks. A fantastic show for the whole family!

November 16 - Opening Reception: In the shadow of the individual
Celebrate the opening reception of the new exhition, In the Shadow of the Individual, with exhibition curator Yasmin Nurming-Por and artists Richelle Bear Hat and Deanna Bowen.

November 18 - One-Man Star Wars Trilogy
Written and performed by Charles Ross, this one-man show has Ross single-handedly playing all the characters with spot-on voice impressions and condenses all three films into one hilarious production. Suitable for Star Wars fans from ages six to Yoda!

January 14 – Harry Manx
Harry Manx has been dubbed an “essential link” between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. His unique sound is bewitching and deliciously addictive, blending Indian folk with slide guitar blues to create his “mysticssipi” sound.

January 26 – Opening Reception: Caroline Monnet
Celebrate the opening of the new exhibition by Montréal-based artist and filmmaker Caroline Monnet’s at Walter Phillips Gallery.

February 22 – Josh Ritter
An American singer-songwriter with a strong voice, a keen wit, and an evocative way with words, Josh Ritter has built a loyal following as one of the leading lights on the contemporary folk scene.

March 3 – This is That LIVE!
Hot on the heels of a new season of satire, CBC Radio’s Pat Kelly and Peter Oldring are hitting the road with a new version of their popular live show, This Is That LIVE! With a healthy mix of character interviews and mockumentary stories, this live send up of public radio doesn’t just report the news, it makes it up.

March 10 - In Performance: Kevin Welch, Neil Osborne, and Fats Kaplin
Don’t miss this extraordinary night of music and song featuring award-winning artists Kevin Welch, Neil Osborne, and Fats Kaplin, along with participants from the Singer-Songwriter Residency.
