The Visual Arts Open Lecture Series presents talks by leading Canadian and international artists, curators, and academics.
Jackson 2bears is a Kanien'kehaka (Mohawk) multimedia artist from Six Nations and Tyendinaga. As faculty for Summer Banff Artist in Residence, 2bears' talk will focus on a in-progress site specific installation in/with his home community, and other recent media works. 2bears will also discuss new work developed during a recent residency at MIT that explores the relationship between artificial intelligence and Indigenous creative and cultural practices.
Biography: Jackson 2bears
2bears’ research-creation activities focus on Indigenous land-based histories and embodied cultural knowledge, wherein they explore the creative use of digital technologies as a means to support the innovation, transmission, expression, and transformation of FNMI creative and cultural practices. Since 1999, 2bears has exhibited his work extensively across Canada in public galleries, museums, and artist-run centres, as well as internationally in festivals and group exhibitions. 2bears is an active researcher in the areas of video arts, digital media, and extended media, with a focus on embodied interaction, live audio/visual (Live Cinema) performance, and immersive, multimedia installation. 2bears is currently Associate Professor of Art Studio and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Arts Research & Technology at the University of Lethbridge.
