Program Notes:

"Nothingness, but oh so many stars" draws its inspiration from Fernando Pessoa’s The Book of Disquiet, whose reflections on creativity and solitude accompanied the writing of this work. Throughout the book, the brilliance of the stars and the vastness of emptiness coexist as different ways of contemplating existence: one as a source of imagination and creative energy, the other as a space for introspection and peace.

The work is written for clarinet, viola, and piano—an ensemble I have long been drawn to for its fluidity. Leadership and accompaniment are constantly exchanged, allowing the three instruments to exist as equal participants in a shared musical discourse. This ensemble also holds a special place for me, as it was the last chamber music setting I experienced before the profound interruption of the pandemic.

The work unfolds as a diptych. The first movement, So Many Stars, explores creative energy as something radiant yet fragile, continually dissolving until only a faint memory remains in a delicate hocket. The second movement, Nothingness, explores a different kind of emptiness: one that can be both comforting and unsettling. A sarabande-like theme, first introduced by the viola and later returning as a chorale in the piano, alternates with veiled interludes that move between repose and uncertainty.

Approximately nine minutes in duration, the work employs a guitar plectrum and a variety of extended techniques. Written especially for the Banff Chamber Music Residency, it receives its World Premiere.
