Your application is an opportunity for the adjudicators understand your practice and what you hope to explore at Banff Centre. Here are some tips to help you prepare a thoughtful and complete application:
Take time to read the full program description, including the program description, dates, eligibility requirements, faculty, facilities, and application materials.
Think about how the program connects to your current practice and what you hope to develop during your time at Banff Centre.
Tip: Be specific about why this program is a good fit for you at this point in your practice.
Each program has its own requirements. Depending on the program, you may be asked to provide a résumé or CV, statement of intent, portfolio, work samples, project proposal, or other supporting materials.
Your application materials should give the adjudication panel a clear sense of your practice and experience.
When selecting work samples or portfolio materials:
Remember: You don't need to submit everything you've ever made. Curate your materials to tell a clear story about your practice.
Your résumé, portfolio, and written materials should work together to give a picture of who you are as an artist, practitioner, or cultural leader.
Highlight the experiences, projects, collaborations, performances, exhibitions, publications, training, research, or other work that are most relevant to the program you're applying to.
If applicable, use your cover letter to explain what brings you to the program.
Consider addressing:
Tip: Avoid simply repeating information from your résumé or the program description. Let the panel learn something about you and your practice.
If the program asks for a project proposal or description of your goals, use this opportunity to communicate your ideas clearly.
You don't need to have every detail figured out. A strong proposal can demonstrate your artistic direction, curiosity, and the questions or ideas you want to investigate.
Some programs ask applicants to complete a technical questionnaire to identify their studio, production, technical, research, or other resource needs.
Think ahead about what you may require during the program, such as:
Be as specific as possible and follow the instructions provided by your program.
Before submitting your portfolio, recordings, writing samples, images, videos, or other materials, consider how they will be experienced by someone who may be unfamiliar with your work.
Check that:
Any collaborators or roles are clearly identified when relevant.
If financial assistance is available for your program, make sure you review the information and complete any required section of your application.
Some scholarships and awards may have specific eligibility requirements, while others may automatically consider eligible applicants.
Before submitting, take a final pass through your application from an adjudicator's perspective. Ask yourself:
Does my application clearly communicate who I am, what I do, why I'm applying, and what I hope to explore?
Then check that all required materials have been uploaded and that your application is fully submitted before the deadline.
There is no single way to be an artist or practitioner, and your application doesn't need to look like anyone else's.
Be thoughtful, specific, and authentic. Share the work you're doing now, the questions you're asking, and what you hope to discover next.
