A mother's unwavering devotion helps her son, born with a clubfoot in 1963, overcome physical challenges and social barriers. Her powerful promise drives their remarkable journey through life's ups and downs. Told across decades, capturing the trials and miracles of life, Once Upon My Mother is the true, funny and moving story of the greatest love there is: that of a mother for her child. Featuring a rich soundtrack of classic songs from French music icon Sylvie Vartan, this vibrant tribute to enduring motherly love is a crowd-pleasing treat. In 1963, Esther gave birth to Roland, the youngest of a large family. Roland was born with a club foot that prevents him from standing. Against everyone's advice, she promises her son that he will walk like everyone else and live a whole and fabulous life – and she will do everything in her power to keep this promise and help him fulfil this incredible destiny.

Join artsPlace Canmore and the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival to celebrate International Mountain Day, designated by the United Nations since 2003 to recognize and create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development, and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain peoples and environments around the world.

This year, we’re celebrating International Mountain Day with a screening of the film Champions of the Golden Valley. This film won the Grand Prize and the Audience Choice Award at the 2024 Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival.

In the remote mountain villages of Bamyan, Afghanistan, a newfound passion for skiing attracts young athletes from rival ethnic groups to the slopes. With minimal gear and makeshift skis, the determined ski coach Alishah Farhang organizes a thrilling ski race that fosters camaraderie, joy, and triumph.
“The ultimate underdog story.” - Variety

Champions of the Golden Valley
(USA, 2024, 81 min)
Director: Ben Sturgulewski
Producers: Sturgefilm, Tideshift Studio, Katie Stjernholm, Baktash Ahadi

"The current state of global unrest, the increasingly destructive effects of climate change (and the impending election, if you’re American like me), can leave us overwhelmed and at times guilty for finding delight in the mountains. This film reminds us we are multitudes: joy and grief, hope and despair, coinciding in times of political crisis and persecution. There are beautiful wide-ranging shots that juxtapose the stark black and white present to the bright colorful images looking back, almost wistfully, at an enchanted past memory. One gets a sense of unfettered freeness in the pockets of snow. The lasting impact of the fleeting moment in time can be felt as the ski program continues to be resilient, to foster the joys of being in the mountains, and its sparkling feeling of hope."
- Shelma Jun, Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival 2024 jury member

Proceeds from the event will go to the Avalanche Canada Foundation in support of youth education, community outreach, research, and public safety programs.

Tickets: $20 | Youth $10 (Under 18)

Reel Time features some of the best films from the Toronto International Film Festival. Organized by Banff Centre, Reel Time has brought alternative cinema to the Bow Valley for over fifteen years.

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a farcical and occasionally sinister scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger-than-fiction true story, Wicked Little Letters follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and her fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town's women -- led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) -- begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all. Directed by Thea Sharrock.

Reel Time features some of the best films from the Toronto International Film Festival. Organized by Banff Centre, Reel Time has brought alternative cinema to the Bow Valley for over fifteen years.

From acclaimed director Levan Akin (And Then We Danced), Crossing is a moving and tender tale of identity, acceptance and unlikely connection that transcends borders and generations. Lia, a retired school teacher living in Georgia, hears from a young neighbour, Achi, that her long-lost niece Tekla, a transgender woman, has crossed the border into Turkey. Hoping to bring Tekla home after a period of estrangement, Lia travels to Istanbul with the unpredictable Achi to find her. Exploring the hidden depths of the city, they cross paths with a transgender lawyer called Evrim, who helps them in their search. Humanistic and compassionate, Akin’s fourth feature is a heartfelt portrayal of overcoming the degrees of separation that divide us.
