Overview  

Moonlighter Film Camps, led by professionals in the outdoor film industry, offer a safe learning environment for women and are designed to enhance technical filmmaking skills.

The Field Skills camp will focus on building your

  • narrative
  • camera work
  • sound capture
  • interviews
  • lighting and other technical filmmaking skills.  

These four-day workshops are open to creatives identifying as women who want to deepen their understanding of crafting content about and within outdoor environments.

Each camp runs independently of the others and must be applied to separately.

Description

During this program, filmmakers will take part in scheduled workshops with faculty and guests to: 

  • build technical filmmaking skills.
  • explore the elements of a compelling narrative in filmmaking.
  • discuss themes in mountain and adventure filmmaking.
  • receive feedback from faculty works-in-progress from faculty.
  • share strategies and best practices with peers. 

Participants will also benefit from 

  • on-campus lodging and meals to support a fully immersive experience.
  • shared production spaces and collaborative areas where participants can work together and share ideas, fostering a vibrant creative community.

Requirements

This program is for filmmakers who identify as women. 

Applicants should have:

  • a strong desire to make filmmaking their career choice.
  • some experience in project planning, camera work, sound capture, pitching, location skills, editing, and distribution.
  • completed at least one film which has been screened in a professional environment. 

Applicants are encouraged to apply with a specific film project they would like to develop and be prepared to share it with the group.

This program is run in English and English is the language of Banff Centre correspondence.

Eligibility

This program is for filmmakers who identify as women. Applicants must be 18+ at the time of the program start date. 

Domestic and international applications are welcome.

Visa Eligibility Information: 

  • Please note that Banff Centre programs do not meet the eligibility requirements for a Canadian Student Visa.
  • If you are accepted into our program, you must obtain a Visitor Visa to enter Canada. Accepted participants are responsible for identifying and complying with the immigration requirements to enter Canada as a visitor from their country of origin. If you require a Visitor Visa please check the current expected processing times well in advance of applying.

Itinerary

This program offers women filmmakers a safe learning environment in which to develop and hone their field skills and camera work.

What to expect: 

Day 1 

  • Arrival, welcome, and orientation to meet your cohort and settle into campus life.
  • Program introduction, the basics of good storytelling. 

Day 2 

  • Technical skills training - camera work and sound capture with guest faculty. 

Day 3 

  • Technical skills training - camera work, interviews, and lighting with guest faculty. 

Day 4 

  • Technical skills training - managing your footage.
  • Program debrief. 

The schedule balances mentorship time with faculty and enriching group sessions and team exercises.

Technical Requirements

Applicants should have some experience in project planning, camera work, sound capture, pitching, location skills, editing, and distribution. 

Applicants should have completed at least one film which has been screened in a professional environment. 

Camera 
You are encouraged to bring a camera to the workshop. If accepted into the program, please indicate the brand and type of camera you would bring in your cover letter.

Application Fee

$65 for individuals, $35 for applicants who identify as Indigenous.

The application fee is non-refundable. 100% of this fee goes towards the cost of administering the application in SlideRoom. 

Scholarships

We are pleased to offer scholarships to support participants in our program. Below are details regarding the scholarship amount and how they are applied.

  • Standard scholarship: covers 100% of tuition fees, and 50% of meals and accommodation costs
  • Canadian Indigenous scholarship: covers 100% of tuition fees, meals, and accommodation costs

Tax Information

Banff Centre will issue official tax receipts for eligible tuition fees and financial assistance and awards as required by the Income Tax Act. You will receive a T2202 (Tuition and Enrolment Certificate) for eligible tuition fees paid and a T4A (Statement of Pension, Retirement, Annuity, and Other Income) for applicable financial assistance and awards.

Resume

A two-page resume or C.V. describing academic, professional, and other relevant experience.

Group applications should submit all resumes in one document. 

Cover Letter

A one-page cover letter explaining why you are interested in this program and what you hope to achieve by attending it.

Project Proposal

Provide a two-page description of your proposed project, including the theme, and relevance to the program.

Sizzle Reel

Video sizzle reel or links to past films is required.

Financial Assistance

Be sure to complete the Financial Aid question in SlideRoom to be eligible for the financial assistance.

Adjudication

Participants are chosen by an adjudication panel comprising of internal and external assessors. The selection criteria include:

  • Quality, originality and artistic merit.
  • Required skills and experience.
  • The potential for the applicant's work to benefit from the program.
  • Banff Centre’s ability to support the project.

Our programs are highly competitive with a limited number of places available. Applicants will be notified of their selection status as soon as the adjudication process is complete. Due to the high volume of applications individual feedback will not be provided.
