Overview
New Play Actor Training provides an opportunity for actors to develop and implement the skills needed to meaningfully workshop new theatre. Participants will engage with a diverse list of texts at various stages of development under the tutelage of guest directors and playwrights. Actors will work on text analysis, be provided with a technical toolkit to assist with cold reading, and practice providing articulate and helpful feedback to creators.
Description
Actors can spend a large portion of their careers workshopping and acting in premieres, but there is very little training specifically for this practice. This program offers early career and established performers the opportunity to explore new plays, alongside lectures, Q & As, coaching's, and on your feet practical application in the skills directors and playwrights look for when working with actors. Participants will receive:
- Mentorship with leading playwrights and directors and dramaturges.
- Daily warmups and rehearsals in studio.
- Hands on practical work on new plays.
- Q and A's and seminars with those experienced in the field.
Requirements
Actors at any stage of their careers, ideally with some training in a post-secondary training environment, and some experience in a rehearsal room.
Eligibility
Applicants must be 18+ at the time of the program start date.
Domestic and international applications are welcome.

Anusree Roy
Anusree is a Governor General’s Award-nominated and four-time Dora Award-winning writer, actor, and director.
For theatre, Anusree’s plays include: Through the Eyes of God, Sisters, Trident Moon, Little Pretty and The Exceptional, Sultans of the Street, Brothel # 9, Roshni, Letters to my Grandma, and Pyaasa. She is the recipient of the K.M. Hunter Award, the RBC Emerging Artist Award, the Carol Bolt Award and the Siminovitch Protégé Prize. She was the 2018 finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize (the largest and oldest playwriting prize for women writing for English-speaking theatre). Currently, she is the commissioned playwright at Tarragon Theatre, writing her new play, 147, 8th Street. Anusree is presently developing a feature film inspired by her audio play, Sisters, as well as directing and premiering her short films, The Birthday Party and God’s Plan (winner of Best Performance & Best Editing at WIFF). She is also an adjunct professor of playwriting at the University of Toronto and a professor of creative writing, teaching advanced drama to MFA students, at the University of British Columbia.
Anusree's playwright residencies include: Nightwood Theatre, Young People's Theatre, Factory Theatre, The Blyth Festival, Theatre Passe Muraille, The Canadian Stage Company and Tarragon Theatre. Anusree spent two seasons as an actor at the Stratford Festival of Canada. She holds a B.A. from York University and an M.A. from the University of Toronto, and most of her plays have been published by Playwrights Canada Press.

Erin Shields
Erin Shields is a Canadian playwright best known for radical adaptations of classical texts which bring neglected female characters centre stage. Her additional text for Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at The Stratford Festival gives a voice to silenced Hero at the climax of the play. Queen Goneril, which premiered at Soulpepper Theatre in rep with King Lear, centres Lear’s stifled daughters as they contend for power in a world that insists they remain powerless. Erin’s illuminating and hilarious adaptation of Paradise Lost (Stratford Festival), won the Quebec Writers Federation Prize for Playwriting. And her harrowing tragedy about sexual violence, If We Were Birds, won the Governor General’s Award for playwriting. Other plays include: Jane Eyre (Citadel Theatre), Piaf/Dietrich (Mirvish Productions/Segal Centre), Beautiful Man (Factory Theatre), The Lady from the Sea (The Shaw Festival), The Millennial Malcontent and Soliciting Temptation (Tarragon Theatre) and Instant (Geordie Theatre). Sarah Kitz
Sarah Kitz (she/they) is the Artistic Director of GCTC and the Vice President of PACT. She is a theatre creator, performer, mentor, arts leader and award winning director. Much of their time in theatre has been dedicated to new creation, re-envisioning classical works for contemporary interpretation, and helping to bring underrepresented voices to the stage.
Sarah has participated in the Michael Langham Workshop in Directing at Stratford Festival, Shaw Festival’s Neil Munro Intern Directors Project, and is a member of Directors Lab North in participation with Lincoln Centre. They have worked at GCTC, NAC, Luminato Festival, Shakespeare in the Ruins, Tarragon Theatre, Theatre Passe Muraille, Crow’s Theatre, Canadian Stage, Buddies in Bad Times, Nightwood Theatre, Next Stage Festival, SummerWorks, Pandemic Theatre, The Canadian Music Theatre Project, Studio 180, and more. Sarah has taught and directed at Sheridan College, University of Windsor, Toronto Metropolitan University and University of Ottawa, mentored with Paprika Festival, and was extensively involved with The A.M.Y. Project, which supports the creative trajectories of young female and non-binary youth in Toronto through arts mentorship.
Hailing from Tkaronto, Sarah now resides with her family on unceded Algonquin Territory and is grateful to be a guest on this beautiful land.

Application Fee
$65 for individuals, $35 for applicants who identify as Indigenous.
The application fee is non-refundable. 100% of this fee goes towards the cost of administering the application in SlideRoom.
Scholarships
We are pleased to offer a range of scholarships to support participants in our programs. Details are outlined below:
Banff Centre Arts Scholarship: All arts participants receive a scholarship covering 100% of tuition and 25% of meal plan and accommodation costs, made possible through generous endowments and donations.
Canadian Indigenous Scholarship: Canadian Indigenous applicants receive support covering 100% of tuition, meal plan and accommodation costs.

Tax Information
Banff Centre will issue official tax receipts for eligible tuition fees and financial assistance and awards as required by the Income Tax Act. You will receive a T2202 (Tuition and Enrolment Certificate) for eligible tuition fees paid and a T4A (Statement of Pension, Retirement, Annuity, and Other Income) for applicable financial assistance and awards.

Adjudication
Participants are chosen by an adjudication panel comprising of internal and external assessors. The selection criteria include:
- Quality, originality and artistic merit.
- Required skills and experience.
- The potential for the applicant's work to benefit from the program.
Our programs are highly competitive with a limited number of places available. Applicants will be notified of their selection status as soon as the adjudication process is complete. Due to the high volume of applications individual feedback will not be provided.
