Overview  

Mâwacihitowinihk Nikamowak: Indigenous Music Residency is Plains Cree for "they sing at the gathering (place)" referring to Sacred Guardian Buffalo Mountain. This music residency centres on collaboration, refinement and presentation of work through audio production and live performance.  

This three-week residency invites musicians of various genres to apply with the intention of developing songs that are nearly completed or finished to take into the final stages of development with the support from faculty, peers and Banff Centre's audio production team.

Description

The program offers opportunity for learning from workshops and time to gather as a group. We offer specialized workshops led by faculty, community collaboration and an opportunity to learn and record in a professional audio recording studio with access to our team. 

 Participants will:

  • Enhance performance skills and deepen their understanding of music production.
  • Engage in faculty-led workshops, group gatherings, and one-on-one sessions with faculty.
  • Develop existing works and arrangements while collaborating with peers and refining their musical practice.
  • Have 24hr access to studios and/or music huts to focus on songwriting and performance preparation.
  • Receive a recording session with our Audio production team to professionally capture their work for non commercial use.*
  • Be part of a supportive community of peers.
  • Take part in public performance opportunities.

*Please note: Audio recording for commercial use is subject to availability, and additional fees may apply. If you are interested in the option of support from a house band for recording purposes, please indicate this in your application.

Requirements

Open to Indigenous people from all regions - locally, nationally, and internationally.

  • Ideal for Indigenous musicians, vocalists, rappers, singer-songwriters, DJ's, and instrumentalists from across diverse music genres.
  • Applicants are required to submit  2 - 3 samples of completed songs or works in progress to develop, refine, record and present during the residency. 
  • Open to solo artists and duos.

Eligibility

Applicants must be 18+ at the time of the program start date. 

Domestic and international applications are welcome.

Visa Eligibility Information: 

  • Please note that Banff Centre programs do not meet the eligibility requirements for a Canadian Student Visa.
  • If you are accepted into our program, you must obtain a Visitor Visa to enter Canada. Accepted participants are responsible for identifying and complying with the immigration requirements to enter Canada as a visitor from their country of origin. If you require a Visitor Visa please check the current expected processing times well in advance of applying.

Itinerary

Sunday, November 15th, 2026

  • Arrival and check-in at the Professional Development Centre.

Monday, November 16th, 2026

  • Indigenous Arts Welcome and Introductions, Program Lunch Reception, Campus Tour, Participant Orientation and Studio Orientation to get access to your Music Studio.

Remainder of Week One

  • Library Tour, Faculty Led Workshops and Recording Sessions (pre-scheduled slots throughout program), and an On-The-Land Engagement.
  • Recording sessions begin, time slots pre-assigned. 
  • One-on-one sessions with mentors will be booked during program dates.

Week Two

  • Gathering with participants, faculty, and staff.
  • Guest faculty presentations and/or workshops, one-on-one sessions with faculty.
  • Audio Recording Sessions continued.
  • November 27th, 2026 - Program Concert 1

Week Three

  • Program check-in with participants, faculty, and staff.
  • Guest faculty presentations and/or workshops, one-on-one sessions with faculty.
  • Audio Recording Sessions continued.
  • December 4th, 2026 - Program Concert 2
  • Closing circle, listening session and closing reception.
  • Participants will also be responsible for any mailing of items, winding down any costs incurred, cleaning and handing in studio key.

Application Fee

$35 for applicants who identify as Indigenous.

This non-refundable fee covers the full cost of processing your application, including the SlideRoom fee.

Scholarships

We are pleased to offer a range of scholarships to support participants in our programs. Details are outlined below:

  • Banff Centre Arts Scholarship: All Indigenous arts participants receive a Scholarship covering 100% of the Total fee, meal plan and accommodation costs, made possible through endowments and donations.

Tax Information

Banff Centre is a post-secondary institution in the province of Alberta. We are required to issue tax receipts for applicable financial assistance and awards received, and eligible tuition charged, as per the Income Tax Act and Canada Revenue Agency. A two-page resume or C.V. describing academic, professional, and other relevant experience.

Group applications should submit all resumes in one document. 

Group Applications

If you are applying with as a duo please include the below details:

  • Full Name
  • Instrument/Role
  • Confirm they are available for the full dates and understand they are full participants of the program.

*Note: An additional $35 registration fee will be added for each member upon acceptance to the program.

Cover Letter

A one-page cover letter explaining why you are interested in this program and what you hope to achieve by attending it.

Project Proposal

Provide a 500-word or 3-minute video description of your proposed project, including the theme, an outline of materials and facilities that may be required, and a breakdown of timelines. These summaries will be used as a narrative for administrative and public use. 

Resource Request Form

Outline all studio, equipment, software, facility, or staff support requested in our upload tool. 

If you are interested in the option of support from a house band for recording purposes, please indicate.

Final resource allocation is at the discretion of the department. This form can be found in the SlideRoom portion of the application.

Portfolio

Please submit a minimum of 3 and maximum of 5 examples of both completed projects and new projects in progress.

They can be live recordings or self recordings. File sizes and specifications are available in our upload tool.

Financial Assistance

Be sure to complete the Financial Aid question in SlideRoom to be eligible for the financial assistance.

Group Applications

The lead applicant should complete:

  • Step 1: One application form
  • Step 2: Pay the $35 processing fee on behalf of the group
  • Step 3: One SlideRoom application

Note: An additional $35 registration fee will be added for each member upon acceptance to the program.

Adjudication

Participants are chosen by an adjudication panel comprising of internal and external assessors. The selection criteria include:

  • Quality, originality and artistic merit.
  • Required skills and experience.
  • The potential for the applicant's work to benefit from the program.
  • Banff Centre’s ability to support the project.

Our programs are highly competitive with a limited number of places available. Applicants will be notified of their selection status as soon as the adjudication process is complete. Due to the high volume of applications individual feedback will not be provided.
