Overview  

The Choral Art Festival is a three-day celebration of choral music event that culminates the Choral Art Residency. The Festival brings 40 participants to Banff for a weekend of song and collaboration alongside Chanticleer, guest faculty and the 12 Choral Art Residency participants.

Expand your choral community through workshops, rehearsals and concerts, all set in one of the most picturesque locations in the world. The festival fee includes tuition, three nights of accommodation, meals, workshops, rehearsals, and performances, providing an immersive choral experience. Participants will leave feeling inspired, connected and ready to tackle the flourishing and exciting world of vocal chamber music.

Embrace the opportunity to grow your skills and experience through engaging workshops and performances. Connect with fellow singers and leading choral artists while celebrating vocal music in the heart of Banff National Park. 

The Choral Art Festival includes:

  • Workshops with Chanticleer, composer Sarah Quartel, soprano Andrea Haines Tim Shantz, and Michael Zaugg.
  • Rehearsals and performances in a variety of configurations, alongside Chanticleer and Choral Arts Residency participants.
  • Three nights of accommodation and all meals at Banff Centre for the duration of the festival.

Requirements

The Choral Art Festival weekend is for individual singers of all ages and experience levels.

We are accepting 10 of each voice: soprano, alto, tenor, bass, of any gender.

Eligibility

Applicants must be 18+ at the time of the program start date. 

Domestic and international applications are welcome.

Visa Eligibility Information: 

  • Please note that Banff Centre programs do not meet the eligibility requirements for a Canadian Student Visa.
  • If you are accepted into our program, you must obtain a Visitor Visa to enter Canada. Accepted participants are responsible for identifying and complying with the immigration requirements to enter Canada as a visitor from their country of origin. If you require a Visitor Visa please check the current expected processing times well in advance of applying.

All meals at Vistas Dining Room are included in your meal plan. Our buffet-style service offers a variety of options, allowing you to choose meals that best suit your needs throughout your stay. 

Banff Centre can respond to most dietary requests. In advance of your arrival, please contact Participant Resources if you have special dietary needs. A medical report from your doctor is required prior to arrival for any medical condition that warrants opting out of the Meal Plan.

Fees & Financial Assistance

Total Program Fee
$2 000.00

Application Fee

$65 for individuals or $35 for applicants who identify as Indigenous.

This non-refundable fee covers the full cost of processing your application, including the SlideRoom fee.

What's Included

The festival program fee includes tuition, three nights of accommodation and all meals in our Vista Dining Room during the festival.

  • Arrive: From 4pm Thursday June 1, 2026 
  • Depart: After 4pm Sunday June 20, 2026 

A limited number of rooms may be available for an additional night on Sunday, June 20, 2027, at a rate of $102 + GST per night to accommodate travel arrangements. During the application process, you will be asked to indicate whether you require this additional night of accommodation. Selecting this option does not guarantee a room. Requests will be reviewed and confirmed during the offer process.

Resume

A two-page resume or C.V. describing academic, professional, and other relevant experience.

Cover Letter

A one-page cover letter explaining why you are interested in this program and what you hope to achieve by attending it.

Portfolio

Please upload each of the following in the portal: 

  • One art song or aria in a foreign language - accompanied or unaccompanied.
  • One non-classical selection (e.g., jazz, folk song, popular, show tune - accompanied or unaccompanied).
  • An excerpt (mm. 1-27) of “When David Heard” by Thomas Weelkes.*

*You can find a score here. Choose the part you think best suits your voice. This excerpt must be unaccompanied.

Adjudication

Participants are chosen by an adjudication panel comprising of internal and external assessors. The selection criteria include:

  • Quality, originality and artistic merit.
  • Required skills and experience.
  • The potential for the applicant's work to benefit from the program.

Our programs are highly competitive with a limited number of places available. Applicants will be notified of their selection status as soon as the adjudication process is complete. Due to the high volume of applications individual feedback will not be provided.

Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of the Banff Centre. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
