This residency invites Indigenous designers and artists to advance personal design projects exploring contemporary and avant-garde approaches to garment and accessory design. The program welcomes artists working in areas such as jewelry, belts, handbags, headpieces, necklaces and bracelets, with an emphasis on new, unusual and experimental ideas that push beyond traditional forms and approaches.
This hybrid residency combines one week of online connection and learning with four weeks of in-person project development at Banff Centre, including studio access, workshops and faculty mentorship.
Faculty-led workshops will explore pattern development and creative techniques that will help designers achieve avant garde aesthetic. Participants will also have dedicated time to work on your projects and share their works in progress through an Open Studios event.
The residency begins with an online week from April 5–9, 2027, giving participants the opportunity to connect with faculty, Banff Centre staff and special guest artists before arriving on campus. The online component includes group sessions and one-on-one meetings to establish connections, introduce the program and help participants prepare for their time on campus.
Upon arriving on campus, April 12 to May 7, 2027, participants will complete an orientation and receive access to Visual Arts facilities and a dedicated studio. During the in-person residency, participants will:
The residency concludes with an Open Studios event, providing an opportunity for participants to share their works in progress with the Banff Centre community.
This program is open to individual Indigenous artists fashion makers, designers, and design companies, including those working with a collaborator from regional, national, and global locations. Participants should have:
Duos in collaboration are welcome to apply. Collaborator is considered a student and must in program workshops.
Participants must be available to attend all elements of the program for its entire duration; variable participation dates will not be considered.
Applicants must be 18+ at the time of the program start date.
Domestic and international applications are welcome.
Visa Eligibility Information:
We welcome applicants of all ages (18+), backgrounds, gender identities and expressions to apply.
Week One:
Online welcome, faculty presentations, and one-on-one project check-ins.
Week Two:
Day one of program begins with Indigenous Arts Welcome, participant orientation, facilitator meetings and tour of facilities, library tour, and program workshops. Studio orientation and facility orientations.
Week Three and Four:
Program check-in with participants, faculty, and staff. Workshops and one-on-ones with program.
Week Five:
Preparation for Open Studios to show work in progress and have studio photographs taken. Participants encouraged to bring completed works to Banff, to display from prior practice for Open Studios, if possible.
Open Studios:
May 4th, 2027 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Public event showcasing works in progress and studio photos.
The latter part of the program will include a closing circle, and closing reception. Participants will also be responsible for any mailing of items, winding down any costs incurred, cleaning studio within guidelines and hand in studio key.

Banff Centre can respond to most dietary requests. In advance of your arrival, please contact Participant Resources if you have special dietary needs. A medical report from your doctor is required prior to arrival for any medical condition that warrants opting out of the Meal Plan.

There are a limited number of Banff Centre Named Scholarships for eligible Canadian and International participants. No separate application is required, all eligible applications are automatically considered.

A one-page cover letter explaining why you are interested in this program and what you hope to achieve by attending it.
Provide a one-page description of your proposed project, including the theme, an outline of materials and facilities that may be required, and a breakdown of timelines. These summaries will be used as a narrative for administrative and public use.
Outline all studio, equipment, software, facility, or staff support required for your project. Final resource allocation is at the discretion of the department. This form can be found in the SlideRoom portion of the application.

Participants are chosen by an adjudication panel comprising of internal and external assessors. The selection criteria include:
Our programs are highly competitive with a limited number of places available. Applicants will be notified of their selection status as soon as the adjudication process is complete. Due to the high volume of applications individual feedback will not be provided.
All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of the Banff Centre. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
