Step into the heart of live music-making and develop the technical expertise, critical listening skills, and collaborative instincts required to record exceptional Chamber Music and Opera performances.

This immersive professional training places emerging recording engineers alongside chamber musicians, vocalists, conductors, and creative teams in active rehearsal, studio, and performance settings. Participants gain hands-on experience capturing the nuance and complexity of acoustic music while working in real-world recording environments.

Guided by internationally acclaimed audio engineers and recording specialists, and Banff Centre Program Lead Theresa Leonard, participants benefit from personalized mentorship, industry insight, and hands-on learning throughout the program.

Description

Audio engineers from around the world participate in this program to expand their technical proficiency, nurture creativity, and elevate their recording abilities through immersive, genre-specific professional practice. 

Through intensive practical training, masterclasses, and mentorship, participants refine advanced recording techniques, deepen their understanding of acoustic production, and learn how to translate sophisticated musical performances into compelling recorded experiences. From microphone placement and session workflow to critical listening and production decision-making, the program offers a comprehensive foundation for aspiring professionals seeking to work at the highest levels of music recording.

Requirements

Intended as a continuing education experience, this program is designed for emerging recording engineers with advanced skills and artistic maturity.

Open to individuals with a combination of formal training and/or professional experience or demonstrated aptitude in audio engineering. Required and desirable skills include:

• A working knowledge of Pro Tools and Pyramix is desirable.
• A practical understanding of file creation and management.
• The ability to manage resources, work to schedule, and multitask effectively.
• Strong time-management, communication, collaboration, and diplomacy skills.

Banff Centre Professional Training Programs are instructed in English. Participants must be available to attend the program and elements for its entire duration; variable participation dates will not be considered.

Eligibility

Applicants must be 18+ at the time of the program start date. 

Domestic and international applications are welcome.
