Nomadism is conceived as a mode of existence and territorialization grounded in practices of regulated mobility. This residency invites participants to engage with the theme of nomadism as both a critical and aesthetic framework. Exploring experiences and relations such as itineraries of humans and non-humans, trajectories of circulation, spatial resistances, and alternative cartographies, nomadism will be approached as a site of inquiry and a form of sensitive and formal attentiveness to the earth. This approach will guide the intentions, conditions, and gestures of art making and artistic collaboration.
Visual Arts residencies at Banff Centre are structured programs of faculty-led activity and mentorship, supporting project-based studio practice.

Studio-based work is further supported by faculty studio visits, lectures, and workshops, fostering a valuable community of learning. Artists are assigned individual studios with access to shared production facilities. Knowledgeable staff are available to provide technical assistance.

Facility access is based on availability of facilitators and priority goes to those requesting access in their initial applications.
This residency is for individual artists or duos (no more than two collaborators) who have:

Priority will be given to artists who have not attended a Visual Arts residency at Banff Centre in the past three years.
Please note that children are not permitted in visual arts studios or production areas.
This program is designed for participation over the entire program period. Variable dates will not be considered.
Applicants must be 18+ at the time of the program start date.
Domestic and international applications are welcome.

The meal plan is equivalent to $68 credit per day.
Using a credit-based system to dine on campus, our flexible meal plan allows you to select meals according to your own needs during your stay. Banff Centre can respond to most dietary requests.
Your program fee includes a single bedroom on the Banff Centre campus for the duration of your program.

$65 for individuals or groups, $35 for applicants who identify as Indigenous.
The application fee is non-refundable. 100% of this fee goes towards the cost of administering the application in SlideRoom.

Banff Centre will issue official tax receipts for eligible tuition fees and financial assistance and awards as required by the Income Tax Act. You will receive a T2202 (Tuition and Enrolment Certificate) for eligible tuition fees paid and a T4A (Statement of Pension, Retirement, Annuity, and Other Income) for applicable financial assistance and awards.

A two-page resume or C.V. describing academic, professional, and other relevant experience.
Group applications should submit all resumes in one document.
A 250 word description of why you wish to attend this program, what you hope to learn or achieve, and what impact it could have on your artistic practice. For thematic residencies, please describe how your practice relates to the theme of the program.
In 500 words, describe the conceptual framework of your proposed project, your weekly execution plan, details of the mediums you propose to use and your level of knowledge in the processes required, and outline any specific technical or support requirements.
Outline all studio, equipment, software, facility, or staff support required for your project. Final resource allocation is at the discretion of the department. This form can be found in the SlideRoom portion of the application.

Participants are chosen by an adjudication panel comprising of internal and external assessors. The selection criteria include:
Our programs are highly competitive with a limited number of places available. Applicants will be notified of their selection status as soon as the adjudication process is complete. Due to the high volume of applications individual feedback will not be provided.
All programs, faculty, dates, fees, and offers of financial assistance are subject to change. Program fee is subject to applicable taxes. Non-refundable fees and deposits will be retained upon cancellation. Any other fees are refunded at the discretion of the Banff Centre. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.
