Overview  

Learn alongside exceptional guest faculty from around the world, exploring the connection between artistic vision and craft. Develop your unique musical voice, bringing genuine expression and perspective to your performances. Delve into masterworks spanning historical to contemporary music mentored by internationally celebrated artists.

During this two-week program, benefit from focused time and inclusive space for engaging discussions, learning with great mentors, reflection, and creation. Define your artistic voice and shape your career trajectory through individual coaching, masterclasses, and performance opportunities.

The inspiring backdrop of the mountains invites you to recharge through hiking and canoeing, establishing lifelong connections with faculty and peers.

Description

Define your artistic vision, enhance performance confidence, and advance your career through:  

  • One-on one lessons and workshops with internationally renowned faculty, including Timo Andres, Michelle Cann, David Kaplan, Nico Namoradze and Joanna MacGregor.
  • Faculty-led masterclasses and workshops exploring technique, creative strategies, concert curation, and career development.
  • Collaborative performance opportunities for faculty and participants.
  • Recordings of public performances for your personal archival use.
  • 24-hour access to a specialized studio.
  • Outdoor group activities with faculty and peers.
  • Opportunities to engage with other artistic disciplines through concerts and program events.
  • Performance opportunities within the broader community of Banff.

Celebrate the music of Philip Glass through a special focus on his Piano Études. Each participant will receive a copy of the Philip Glass Piano Études commemorative book set, courtesy of Artisan Publishers and Pomegranate Arts.

A minimum of two spots will be reserved for aspiring composer-pianists. Composer-pianists should be prepared to perform their own works.

Requirements

This program is open to emerging classical pianists. Musicians who have recently graduated or currently undertaking post-secondary or postgraduate studies are welcome to apply.

Composer/pianists should expect to perform their own works.

Participants must be available to attend the program and elements for its entire duration; variable participation dates will not be considered.

Eligibility

Applicants must be 18+ at the time of the program start date. 

Domestic and international applications are welcome.

Visa Eligibility Information: 

  • Please note that Banff Centre programs do not meet the eligibility requirements for a Canadian Student Visa.
  • If you are accepted into our program, you must obtain a Visitor Visa to enter Canada. Accepted participants are responsible for identifying and complying with the immigration requirements to enter Canada as a visitor from their country of origin. If you require a Visitor Visa please check the current expected processing times well in advance of applying.

All meals at Vistas Dining Room are included in your meal plan. Our buffet-style service offers a variety of options, allowing you to choose meals that best suit your needs throughout your stay. 

Banff Centre can respond to most dietary requests. In advance of your arrival, please contact Participant Resources if you have special dietary needs. A medical report from your doctor is required prior to arrival for any medical condition that warrants opting out of the Meal Plan.

Application Fee

$65 for individuals or $35 for applicants who identify as Indigenous.

This non-refundable fee covers the full cost of processing your application, including the SlideRoom fee.

Scholarships

We are pleased to offer a range of scholarships to support participants in our programs. 

  • Banff Centre Arts Scholarship
    Program participants receive a Banff Centre Arts Scholarship that covers the cost of tuition, plus a contribution towards accommodation and meals.

*Participant costs shown above reflect the cost after the scholarship has been applied. To be eligible for Banff Centre scholarship, please complete the Financial Aid section when uploading your supporting materials.

  • Canadian Indigenous Arts Scholarship 
    Canadian Indigenous Arts applicants receive a scholarship that covers the full cost of tuition, accommodation and meals.

Additional Funding

There are a limited number of Banff Centre Named Scholarships for eligible Canadian and International participants. No separate application is required, all eligible applications are automatically considered.

Tax Information

Banff Centre is a post-secondary institution in the province of Alberta. We are required to issue tax receipts for applicable financial assistance and awards received, and eligible tuition charged, as per the Income Tax Act and Canada Revenue Agency. Resume

A two-page resume or C.V. describing academic, professional, and other relevant experience.

Cover Letter

A one-page cover letter explaining why you are interested in this program and what you hope to achieve by attending it.

Portfolio

Musicians: Submit a maximum of three audio or video recordings that best demonstrate your musical practice.

Composers: Submit a minimum of two original works, including the score and a corresponding recording or MIDI realization for each work.

Project Proposal

Provide a one-page description of your proposed project, including the theme, and relevance to the program.

Technical Questionnaire

Outline all studio, equipment, software, facility, or staff support required for your project. Final resource allocation is at the discretion of the department. This form can be found in the SlideRoom portion of the application.

Financial Assistance

Be sure to complete the Financial Aid question in SlideRoom to be eligible for the financial assistance.

Adjudication

Participants are chosen by an adjudication panel comprising of internal and external assessors. The selection criteria include:

  • Quality, originality and artistic merit.
  • Required skills and experience.
  • The potential for the applicant's work to benefit from the program.
  • Banff Centre’s ability to support the project.

Our programs are highly competitive with a limited number of places available. Applicants will be notified of their selection status as soon as the adjudication process is complete. Due to the high volume of applications individual feedback will not be provided.
